Walter Oset, a man whose kindness and hearty laughter warmed the hearts of all who knew him, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2026, at the age of 93. Born in February 1933 in Dickson City, Pennsylvania, Walter was the cherished son of the late John and Anna Oset, coal miners who later moved their family to Newark, New Jersey.
In 1941, with the start of World War II, Walter’s journey took a defining path when he entered the Marine Corps in 1950 at the age of 17, during the Korean War conflict. While serving, he not only honored his country but also embraced moments of camaraderie and joy, playing baseball alongside legendary Ted Williams and competing against Willie Mays, who represented the Army.
Walter’s professional career was marked by loyalty and leadership. In 1961, he joined the Heavy and General Laborers Local 472, dedicating himself as both a laborer and a respected shop steward until his retirement in 1998. His commitment to his work mirrored the strength and reliability he displayed in every other aspect of his life, earning him the admiration of colleagues and friends alike.
It was in 1955, at a dance held at the Polish Home in Irvington, where Walter met Mary Ann, the love of his life. Their bond blossomed quickly, culminating in their marriage in 1958. Together, they raised two sons, Jeffrey and Thomas, sharing a life rich with happiness and devotion. Though Mary Ann and their son Thomas have passed, their memories remain treasured pillars in Walter’s legacy.
Walter’s family was the core of his existence. He found immense joy in spending time with his grandsons—Matt, Steve, Troy, and Ryan—whether hunting, fishing, camping, or simply savoring a cup of coffee in the cabin. These moments echoed the laughter and storytelling that were so characteristic of Walter, creating lasting memories filled with warmth and love. His family fondly recalls how they loved listening to his stories, his infectious laugh, and the jokes that brightened every gathering.
Known for his kind heart and generous spirit, Walter’s presence was a source of comfort and joy. He touched many lives with his authenticity and strength, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. He will be deeply missed by his son Jeff and his wife Joyce (nee Mandzik); his daughter-in-law Lucille (nee Whary); his grandsons Matthew and his wife Jessica (nee Voorhees), Steven and his wife Kim (nee Bierilo), Troy, and Ryan.
Walter’s life will be honored with a visitation on Wednesday May 13, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, followed by a funeral service on Thursday May 14, 2026, at 10:00 AM, both held at the Galante Funeral Home in Union, New Jersey, located at 2800 Morris Ave. Burial will follow the funeral service at Neshanic Cemetery.
Walter Oset’s story is one of love, dedication, and joyful spirit a story that will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know him. Though we say goodbye, his laughter, kindness, and enduring legacy will forever remain in our hearts.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his name to Semper Fi Fund.
