Peter George Mitchell, Jr (Pop-Pop) of Union NJ, passed away peacefully Monday, July 27 2026 at age 84.
Peter was born and raised in Jersey City, NJ. He enlisted into the Air Force in 1960 and was stationed in England where he served as Military Police.
Peter had a long career in banking as Senior Vice President of Retail Lending across a series of banking institutions until his retirement in 2004. He was an active member of the Elizabeth Host and Westfield Lion’s Clubs, as well as the American Legion Post 60 for many years. He was active with the deaf/blind community at St Joseph’s Church in Elizabeth. Most important to him was being a husband, a father, a grandfather and a friend.
His most cherished time was spent with his grandchildren and family, attending countless softball games, school plays and afternoons at Hot Dog Park. He avidly supported live music, whether it be a Broadway show, Frank Sinatra on the stereo or his son's band in a questionable bar (although he did walk out on The Beatles). He deeply loved time spent with his siblings and their families, Eugene & Lucy Laux and Lorraine & Lou Germinario. He enjoyed gardening, waking up at 5 am on vacation to walk the beach at sunrise and collect seashells while the family slept in, the occasional trip to Atlantic City, his service clubs and conversing over the fence with the neighbors. He never met an animal he didn’t like or a stranger he wouldn’t engage in conversation. He was soft spoken, kind and always kept an open hand, never missing an opportunity to help anyone in need. Above all else, Peter lived his life in service of those around him. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
He is pre-deceased by his father Peter Mitchell, Sr, his mother Elva Mitchell (nee Gavin), his brothers Eugene Laux (Woody) & George Pappas, his sisters Lorraine Germinario, Patricia Harmon & Elva Visco.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Barbara Mitchell, his son Peter Mitchell, III, his daughter Nicole Carey, his son-in-law Ryan Carey, his grandchildren Madison Carey, Isabella Carey and James Carey, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Monday, August 3 from 4:00-8:00 pm at Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave Union, NJ 07083. A Memorial Service with military honors will be held at 7:30 pm.
