Maria Consuelo DeRoo 95 of Union passed away peacefully at home on August 9, 2012.
Visitation will be on Sunday 2-5 PM at the Galante Funeral Home 2800 Morris Ave. Union, with a service at 4 pm.
She was born in Havana, Cuba on Nov. 3, 1916 to Jesus Dios and Maria Consuelo Fernandez. As a young girl , she made several trans-Atlantic crossings between Cuba and her parent’s homeland of Galicia, Spain with her parents and younger siblings before immigrating to New Jersey with her family in 1929. She lived for many years in the Ironbound Section of Newark and in Union. She was married to Manuel Hermo from 1934 until his death in 1979.

She was an active member of Club Espana in Newark for many years, served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and then as the club’s first female president in the early 1970s. She was very creative with an artistic flair she put to use as both a skilled dressmaker and excellent cook of authentic Spanish food. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Russ, an amateur gemologist and past president of the North Jersey Mineralogic Society. In her later years she took up bead making as a hobby, only to impress family and friends with her great skill in seni-precious jewelry-making.
Maria is survived by her beloved husband of 27 years, Edward R. DeRoo, daughters Frances Hermo Hurdman and Teresa Hermo Reisdorf and her husband’s children Donald DeRoo and Janet Greenleaf. Also was devoted to her family and took great joy in the company of her grandchildren, Ted, Gregory and Christina Reisdorf, Kim and Peter Hurdman, and Michael Henry; her four great grandchildren, Taylor, Madison, T. J. and Sloane Reisdorf, as well as her many nieces and nephews. She was pre deceased by Mr. Hermo and her four brothers, Jesus, John, Manuel and Domingo Dios.
