The late Madam Margaret Ama Safo was born in 1944 to Opanin Barnabas
Kwaku Safo and Madam Afua Obiyaa. Margaret was the firstborn child of
her parents. Growing up, Margaret Safo had a deep passion for fashion.
With the support of her parents, she pursued a fashion design course along
with private dressmaking classes. Her creativity and skill quickly became
evident, and she firmly established herself in the creative industry. Her
journey in fashion was also inspired by the late Mr. Robert Owusu, who
would later become her husband in 1963.
Their marriage was blessed with five children: twin girls Juliet Ennim and
Patience Owusu, and three boys Samuel Owusu (deceased) Terry Owusu
Ennim and Nana Kwame Boateng. Demands of motherhood, led Auntie Ama
had to put her professional aspirations on hold to focus on raising her
children. A decision which showed her love and dedication to her family.
Her father, Opanin B. K. Safo, was among the early Ghanaians who studied
to become one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He was baptized shortly after the
faith was introduced in Ghana. Following his example, Auntie Ama and her
siblings regularly attended meetings at the Kingdom Hall, listened to Bible
discourses, and actively took part in various aspects of being a one of
Jehovah's Witnesses. Over time, many of her father's relatives also studied
and became Jehovah's Witnesses.
Auntie Ama herself was baptized in 1994, shortly after her father's passing.
Her mother, Madam Afua Obiyaa, passed away some years later.
As time passed, Auntie Ama's daughter, Juliet Ennim, and her husband,
Evans Boateng, invited her to visit them in the United States, where they
lived. In 2010, she left Ghana to join them and later became a U.S. citizen in
2021.
After nearly fifteen years in the U.S., she deeply missed her extended family
in Ghana and began making plans for a surprise visit back home.
Unfortunately, before she could make the trip, she fell ill. After a brief
illness, she passed away on May 29, 2025.
Auntie Ama was a humble and peaceful woman, loved by everyone who met
her. You could never leave her presence without receiving her advice or
words of wisdom.
