Jose Luis Bexiga

d. May 26, 2024

Jose Luis was born in Bordeira, Algarve, Portugal. He was as married to Deolinda Bexiga for 66 years, until she passed on January 8, 2022.

He enjoyed a long and healthy life. He was survived by his son Leonel (Leo) and his daughter Leonia (Lee), a daughter-in-law, Nicole, a son-in-law Vern and his granddaughter Ashley.

Jose was a hard-working and courageous man. To provide for his young family, he made the journey from Portugal, through Spain, To Paris - mostly on foot. He then embarked to America to find better opportunities and arranged to have his family join him 2 years later, with their "green cards" waiting at New York's JFK when they arrived.

Never having much money, he was an intent saver. He always kept food on the table and a roof over his family's head(s). And he achieved the American Dream of home ownership, even paying his mortgage in full, owing his house free and clear. His surviving children are so proud of him and have learned the values of hard work and earning an honest living.

When he wasn't working and balancing the budget, he enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, which yielded the largest, sweetest tomatoes, string beans, peppers, cucumbers and lettuces. He also enjoyed spending his time playing cards, mostly, canasta, at the Portuguese Club in Newark, New Jersey. His passion was dancing with his wife, and any other willing female, while his body permitted - everyone watched in awe at his prowess on the dance floor.

Jose Luis left many beautiful memories inside all of us and an immense love that we will carry forever in our hearts.

Jose Luis, we will never forget you and we will always carry your love in our hearts. You were kind and funny and honest; a great yet simple man.

We love you. Rest in peace.

The Bexiga family would like to extend it's sincere and heartfelt gratitude to those special people that helped care for Jose Luis in his final years, days, and hours. You were angels sent to him, and to us, by God.
