Jose Alonso, 82 of Clark passed away on August 19, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, after receiving his last rites.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Jose at the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave. Union on Wednesday August 21 from 4-8 PM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church in Scotch Plains on Thursday at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Born in La Guia, Gomesende, Spain, Jose immigrated to Newark in 1970, and settled in Clark in 1987. He was the owner and operator of Celanova Bar and Lounge in Newark and Marbella Restaurant in North Arlington earlier in his career. He was also a dedicated longshoreman for ILA Local 1235 at Maher Terminals until his retirement in 2005. Known as Pepe O Marques to his friends, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, and was a huge soccer fan. Above all, he cherished time spent with his grandchildren, and at his home in Spain, where he treasured time tending to his fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and vast agricultural endeavors.
Jose was the beloved husband of Dolores Alonso; loving father of Michelle Alonso-Basanta and her husband Joseph, Janette Cardoso and her husband Jose and Judy Alvarez and her husband Juan; dear grandfather of Mia, Joaquin, Nico, Iago, Matias, Emma, Bella and Luna. He was predeceased by parents Jose Alonso and Celina Salgado and his siblings Luis Alonso and Anuncia Alonso. Jose is also survived by many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory are being collected by the family, to be used for the benefit of the Virgen de la Guia.
