Union

George John Petras III, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friendly ear to all, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2026 at the age of 90.

Born on September 8, 1936, in Newark, New Jersey, he was a 1954 graduate of Barringer High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving his country during the Korean War aboard the USS Des Moines. His military service developed the discipline, loyalty, and sense of duty that remained hallmarks of his life.

He is survived by the love of his life - Irene Goldie-Petras. They shared 67 years of marriage, a partnership built on devotion, humor, and an enduring love for one another. In a nod to the humor, they were married on his birthday so he wouldn't forget his anniversary. They settled in Union, New Jersey, in 1966 where they raised three children - George IV, Larry, and Robin. He served as president of the local and state of NJ Exchange Clubs.

He also devoted countless hours to coaching youth in Union’s Little League Baseball and in USY Basketball. He was easy to talk with, putting people at ease whether at work in the family industrial supply business, or with the countless people he came in contact with during his various activities.

Family was the center of George's life and he was immensely proud of his children, grandchildren, and all their accomplishments. He was especially proud that both of his sons graduated from the University of Notre Dame. He also took great pride in his daughter, who was a Division I tennis and track athlete at Seton Hall University. Their achievements were a source of tremendous joy for him.He leaves behind a loving family who will miss him dearly and carry his memory forward for generations to come. His endearing words, “Hugs for Strength!” will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew him. George’s life was defined by love, devotion to family, and service to his community.

May his kind and enduring spirit live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
