Whiting

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George John Brophy, Sr., who passed away peacefully at his home in Whiting, New Jersey on April 14, 2026, at the age of 72.

George John Brophy, Sr. was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a longtime resident of Elizabeth and Union, New Jersey, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and community. He will be remembered for his warmth, humor, and charm, and for the way he made people feel comfortable and welcome wherever he went. He had a personality that drew people in and a gift for making others feel at ease.

He also had a lifelong love of music and was known for his singing and dancing, which brought joy to those around him.

George grew up with humble beginnings, which shaped his strong work ethic and deep appreciation for family. He worked as a pipe fitter at the Exxon refinery from 1981 to 1996, where he took great pride in providing for his family. After sustaining a serious back injury at work, he endured years of chronic pain with strength and perseverance. Through all of life’s challenges, his love for his family remained constant and unwavering.

George was a generous man who was always willing to help others before himself. He never hesitated to lend a hand when someone was in need, and his kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

He loved deeply and passionately and was always quick to remind the people in his life how much they meant to him. He was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy and pride.

He was predeceased by his mother, Ethel; his father, William; and his sister, Jacqueline.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Kathleen “Kathy” Brophy; his children, daughter April; son Allan and his wife Lisa; son George II and his wife Melissa; and son Michael; his grandchildren, Ally, Zach, Madison, George III, and Caitlin; his brother, Bill and his wife Kiva; and his sister, Audrey and her husband Al; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

Visitation will be held on Monday, April 20 from 4:00–8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 21 at 10:30 AM. Interment will take place at Hollywood Memorial Park.
