Dorothy A. Brown

"Family Matriarch, and Her Children's and Grandchildren's Rock"

Dorothy A. Brown (nee Scheper), 96 of Union passed away peacefully at home on March 14, 2019.

Funeral is from the Galante Funeral Home, 2800 Morris Ave. Union on Saturday March 23 at 8:45 AM. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Michael's Church in Union at 10 AM. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation is on Friday March 22 from 5-9 PM at the funeral home.

Born in Jersey City, Dorothy was a longtime resident until moving to Union in 1984. A woman who deeply appreciated science, she enrolled in Nursing school at Jersey City Medical Center, and graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1943. Dorothy loved her work as a registered nurse, and served in the emergency room, and in the Department of Public Health until her growing family needed her full attention several years later. Nursing however remained close to Dorothy's heart, and she kept up with the latest practices and treatments well into her 60s.

Dorothy was a worldwide traveler, roaming the globe with her family, spending vacations and taking part in cultural experiences as far away as Australia, Europe and the Orient, and also throughout the United States. During these travels, Dorothy often played the role of tour guide for her family, as prior to many trips she read extensively on local culture. She took a great interest in customs throughout the world, and instilled it's importance in her children.

While at home, Dorothy enjoyed crocheting for her family. She loved to visit museums, and had a deep appreciation for renaissance art. A lover of music, she also liked to take part in a good game of gin rummy.

Most important to Dorothy were her children and grandchildren; and she gave her children the gift of a driver's license and a good education; and took part fully in her grandchildren's' lives. She had so much love for her grandchildren, her favorite was genuinely whichever one she was spending time with in that moment. Very involved in their many lives, she never confused one's accomplishments with another's; and attended every major life event for them, which included every sporting event they were a part of. She was truly their #1 fan.

Dorothy joins in heaven her beloved husband of 75 years Elmer Robert Brown, who passed away in January 2019. She was the loving mother of Robert Brown and his wife Georgie, Karen Herson and her husband Mark, Donna Brown, Janice McHugh and her husband Guy, Mary Brown, Maggie Kelly and her husband Kevin, Kathy Trifon and her husband James, Dorothy Errazuriz and her husband Victor and Carolyn Galvin and her husband Sinon; dear grandmother of David, Jennifer, Lora, Kelly, Meaghan, Kyle, Caitlyn, Brandon, Lauren, Brianna Lee, Justin, Melissa, Victor, Nicholas, Sebastian, Veronica, Aaron, Sarah, Connor and Alanna; and special great-grandmother to 13. She is also survived by her brother Walter Scheper, and brother-in-law William Allen Brown, and was predeceased by her brother Frank Scheper, sister Grace McAlarney, sisters-in-law Iris Scheper, Janet Ryan, Dolores Brown and Jessie Scheper, and brothers-in-law Harry McAlarney and Joe Ryan.
