Dolores Ann Chadwick
January 25, 1952 – August 25, 2026

Dolores Ann Chadwick was born on January 25, 1952, in Union, New Jersey, to Richard and Ruth Mathews. The beloved middle child, she grew up alongside her older brother, Richard Jr., and younger sister, Joann, forming bonds that would shape her life and bring endless stories and laughter to her family.

Dolores began her education at Jefferson Elementary School in Union and graduated from East Orange High School in 1970. On March 29, 1974, she married Willie Chadwick in East Orange. Together, they welcomed their son, Cameron Taiwan Chadwick, on September 2, 1974. Dolores’s heart knew no bounds—she also lovingly raised her nephew, Marlon Mathews, as her own son.

Throughout her career, Dolores served as an Administrative Assistant at several prominent corporations, including Bell Labs, Verizon, and Telcordia Technologies. Her professionalism and dedication left a lasting impression on colleagues and friends alike.

Dolores cherished her family deeply and delighted in sharing stories from her childhood. She often recounted the playful dares from her brother Richard that led to mischief and adventure, and fondly teased her sister Joann for being the “scaredy cat” while Dolores herself embraced the role of the daredevil.

As an aunt, Dolores was devoted and nurturing, especially to Mary Ann Mathews, with whom she enjoyed countless zoo trips and festivals. She also opened her home to her nephew Wayne Peterson, supporting him as he pursued his college and military career, and helping him save for his first home and engagement ring.

Dolores’s passions were many—she loved to laugh, travel to the Caribbean, and attend jazz festivals. Her true artistic spirit shone through her love of painting. She took art classes at Union County College and was recognized for her talent, placing third in the Union County Art Show for a painting of her father and his merchant marine mate during World War II. Her artwork captured cherished family moments, including portraits of her sister Joann, adventures with Cameron at the Bronx Zoo, and scenes inspired by Marlon’s world travels.

Dolores had a lifelong love for animals and always had a cat by her side, from Smokey to Smacky to Bandit and Bubbles. When given the chance to travel anywhere in the world, she chose to swim with dolphins in Jamaica—a testament to her adventurous spirit and her deep appreciation for animals.

Known for her vibrant personality, Dolores was never afraid to speak her mind. With Dee Dee, you always knew exactly where you stood—her honesty was matched only by her expressive facial reactions, which spoke volumes without a word. Her adventurous spirit, impeccable fashion sense, and infectious energy brought joy to all who knew her. She was an avid sports fan, especially when cheering on her sons and grandchildren.

Affectionately known as “Dee Dee,” “Aunt Dee,” and “Nina” by her grandchildren, Dolores’s legacy is one of love, laughter, and unwavering support.

She is survived by her sons, Cameron Chadwick and Marlon Mathews; grandchildren, Amaya, Cameron Jr., Sydney, and Mason; sister-in-law, Bertha Mathews; nephews, Wayne Peterson and Roy Twitty; nieces, Mary Ann Mathews and Shannon Sanders; and a host of other relatives and loving friends. Dolores was predeceased by her parents, Richard and Ruth Mathews, her brother Richard Jr., and her sister Joann.

Dolores will be forever remembered for her joyful spirit, infectious energy, and unconditional love. Her laughter and warmth will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know and love her.
