Despina E. Pelardis, 89 of Springfield peacefully passed away on May 12, 2026.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation for Despina at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 721 Rahway Ave. Union on Monday May 18 from 9-11AM. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 AM and burial will follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Born in Agios Isidoros, Rhodes, Greece, a small mountain village located high on the slopes of Mount Attavyros, the tallest mountain on the island of Rhodes, Despina grew up surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. As the oldest of eight siblings, she left school at a young age to help care for her family’s farm, goats, and sheep. It was there that she learned the importance of sacrifice, hard work, and family at an early age, values that would later shape the loving, selfless, and devoted mother she became.

Despina married at 22 years old and gave birth to her seven children in Agios Isidoros. The family lived in a small home with a living room, kitchen, and two small bedrooms. While raising seven children, she continued to care for the family’s farm animals and olive trees. Life was not easy. She would walk a mile to a local natural water reservoir (known as the “milo”) to clean clothes by hand. Despite the hardships, it was her resilience, deep love for her family, and the support of her community that carried her through those years.

In 1975, she immigrated to the United States with her husband and children, settling in Roselle, NJ. She lived a simple life centered entirely around her family and the church. She never learned to speak English because she wanted her children to always speak to her in Greek, so they would never lose their language or their roots. This kind of selfless devotion that began at such an early age defined her life, and she lived each day in service to her children and grandchildren. Her love was unconditional in a way that words can’t capture. No mistake, no hardship, no moment of disappointment ever weakened her love. It was constant, unwavering, and deeply felt by everyone who knew her.

She moved to Linden in 1992, where she enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden, her bright flowers, and her fruit trees. Despina had a green thumb and could nurture anything back to beauty, including a fig tree from a single branch brought from Greece. She most enjoyed cooking and baking for her children and grandchildren. It was her way of expressing her love, in a way that words never could.

In 2018, Despina moved to Millburn with her daughter Tsambika, where she found joy in simple routines like pushing her shopping cart to local farmers' markets. In 2021, she settled in Springfield, where Tsambika selflessly devoted herself to her mother's daily care and wellbeing. All of her children cared for her with the same love and devotion that Despina had given to them throughout their lives.

In her later years, as Alzheimer’s slowly progressed, her mind would often drift back to the places and moments she cherished most. She would speak as though she were on a beach overlooking the ocean with her children, back in Greece surrounded by the love of her family, or in the kitchen preparing meals for her grandchildren. Those memories remained deeply ingrained in her heart and brought her comfort throughout her later years. She spent the last years of her life looking most forward to the days when her children and grandchildren would visit her. Her family was what defined her, what gave her purpose, what she was most proud of, and what brought her the greatest joy.

Despina was a devoted member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. She treasured her trips to St. Fanourios Greek Orthodox Church, Agia Skepi Monastery in White Haven, PA, and Agios Nektarios Monastery in Roscoe, NY, where she built meaningful friendships.

Despina was the beloved wife of the late Emmanuel; loving mother of Panagiotis Pelardis, Statis Pelardis and his wife Karol, Tsambikos Pelardis and his wife Maria, Tsambika Pelardis, Georgios Pelardis, Afroditi Pelardis and Michael Pelardis and his wife Carmen. She was the cherished grandmother of Manoles, Beatriz, Irene, Manolis, Anastasia, Manoli, Lucas, Alex, Marco and Sophia; and adoring great-grandmother of Alix, Adrianna, Mia Rouse and Julien. She was also the dear sister of Statis, Vasilia, Tsampika, Anastasios, Christos, George and the late Menelaos.
