Carmelo Liuzzo, MD
October 3, 1928 – July 6, 2024
Respected Physician and Beloved Father
Carmelo Liuzzo MD, of Union, passed away at home surrounded by the people he loved in the
place that he called home for over 55 years. Born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, he was the youngest
son of the eight children of Giuseppe and Anna Liuzzo. He would become the only member of
the family to not only graduate college, but also to graduate medical school at The University of
Messina. He often would tell stories of his ferry ride back and forth to school and how he
would “take the sun” on the deck during his commutes. He met his wife, Stella (Lugara) Liuzzo,
while she and her family were vacationing in Italy and, upon his arrival to America, married a
year later in 1959. The following year, Dr. Liuzzo would open his Internal Medicinel practice in
Newark, NJ, where he would go on to heal the residents of the Ironbound Section for the next
50 years. Dr. Liuzzo retired at the age of 80 years old in 2008. He was a passionate gardener
who could take any stretch of land and turn it to beauty and loved to spend time at his shore
home in Bradley Beach where he swore that the ocean air healed better than any modern
medicines. He loved debating about politics, finance and the New York Yankees.
Dr. Liuzzo was predeceased by his wife Stella in 2019. He is
survived by his children, Anna M. Liuzzo, Joann R. Liuzzo and Joseph C. Liuzzo.
He is also survived by his niece and nephew, Beth Lugara and Joseph F. Lugara,
his two sisters and many nieces and nephews in Italy, and his devoted aide and friend, Richard Anderson.
Services at Galante Funeral Home will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in
memory of Dr. Liuzzo to Cause 4 Paws Pet Rescue and Adoptions of Westfield at c4prescue.org
or Shriners Children’s Hospital at donatelovetotherescue.org.
