After a long and full life devoted to faith and family, Antonia P. Lignos, 99, of Union, passed peacefully into God’s loving care on December 16, 2025.
Born in Lesvos, Greece, in her beloved village of Antissa, Antonia carried her deep-rooted traditions, values, and faith with her throughout her life. She settled in Linden in 1974 and later moved to Union twenty years ago to be closer to her dear church. A devoted parishioner of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, her faith was the foundation of her life and guided her through every season.
Antonia lived with grace, humility, and quiet strength. She had a generous spirit and a gift for nurturing others. A master in the kitchen, she was especially known for her home cooked traditional meals, always made with love to share freely with family. Her home was a place of warmth and welcome, filled with the comforting aroma of her fresh bread and the gentle sound of her laughter.
Above all else, Antonia treasured her role as a mother and grandmother. She taught her family that love and faith could overcome life’s greatest challenges. Her presence was steady and reassuring, and her legacy lives on in the values she passed down through generations.
Antonia was the beloved wife of the late Panagiotis Lignos, and the loving mother of Eleni Papoutsis, Nicholas Lignos and his wife Ally, and Evangelia Niotis and her husband Manny. She was a cherished grandmother to eight grandchildren and an adoring great-grandmother to nine, each of whom held a special place in her heart.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a visitation at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 721 Rahway Avenue, Union, NJ, on Friday, December 19, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the church on Saturday at 9:00 a.m., followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield, NJ. Arrangements are under the care of Galante Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Antonia’s memory may be made to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church.
